Annan voices support for mediation efforts in Venezuela

17 December 2002

The United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, today reiterated his full support for the mediation efforts being undertaken in Venezuela under the auspices of Cesar Gaviria, the head of the Organization of American States (OAS).

"These talks provide an opportunity which must not be missed to find a peaceful political solution to the present crisis on the basis of constitutionality," the Secretary-General said in a statement released by a UN spokesman in New York.

The statement went on to urge the Government and the opposition to cooperate with the mediation efforts, and called on them to "refrain from behaviour that disrupts normal life in Venezuela."
