African leaders are set to meet in Nigeria later this week to address the future of regional food security programmes at a summit organized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The meeting in Abuja will provide "a high-level forum to discuss fruitful partnerships amongst the regional/subregional bodies in Africa…[and] will enhance coordination of initiatives and programmes related to agriculture and food security and facilitate immediate action for addressing the challenges facing Africa," according to a statement issued by FAO.

The summit, from 11 to 12 December, is expected to attract the Presidents of a number of African States as well as the leadership of the FAO, the African Development Bank, the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), and several other regional development organizations.

Topping the agenda will be the “harmonization” of the activities of the regional economic organisations with the NEPAD Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme. The meeting will also focus on cooperation between international financial institutions in support of increased agricultural and rural development and regional support to national food security and agricultural development efforts.
