Manoel de Almeida e Silva told the press in Kabul that on 2 December the Disarmament Commission went to Piroz Nakhjir, where some 103 weapons were reportedly collected.
These included 72 Kalashnikovs, 14 rocket propelled grenade launchers, one rocket launcher and one 83-millimetre mortar. “An additional 30 weapons have also been promised to be returned,” the spokesman said, noting that the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) monitors the storage of the collected arms on a regular basis.
During a monitoring trip to Sholgara on 6 December, UNAMA reported continued basic adherence to the disarmament/demilitarization agreement concluded a week earlier. “No armed fighters were seen and the mood of the local population is one of optimism,” Mr. de Almeida e Silva said.
