With peace in hand, challenges in Angola now humanitarian, developmental - UN envoy

With peace in Angola "now a fact," the major challenges facing the country were now humanitarian and developmental, the head of the United Nations Mission in Angola (UNMA) said as he left Luanda for New York.

Ibrahim Gambari told reporters yesterday that given the completion of Angola's peace process under the Lusaka Protocol, it was appropriate that Erick de Mul, the current UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator, was designated as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Officer-in-Charge of the UN Mission.

Mr. Gambari is expected to visit Luanda regularly in his capacity as a non-resident Representative until the expiration of the Mission's mandate in February 2003.
