Celebrating the United States holiday of Halloween – traditionally an occasion for supporters to collect money for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) – the action hero Spiderman today made an appearance at UN Headquarters in New York.

Attending a Halloween party for children of UN delegates and staff, the comic book hero’s presence served to highlight the “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF” fundraising campaign. Spiderman was scheduled to present UNICEF with thousands of coins to kick off the evening’s donations, encouraging everyone to “Be a Hero: Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF.”

The celebration, which also feature Spiderman-themed games, face painting, activities and music, was festooned with large spiderwebs woven from tiny lights. Following the party, there was also a scheduled screening of the movie Spiderman.

The event was co-sponsored by UNICEF, the US Fund for UNICEF, the UN Department of Public Information and Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment.

The Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF tradition began in 1950 in Philadelphia, where a youth group collected $17 in decorated milk cartons on Halloween to help children overseas. Since then, US children have raised more than $115 million under the programme to help build a better future for young people worldwide.

“The Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign makes Halloween both enjoyable and rewarding for millions of children nationwide, and we are overjoyed to bring celebration and excitement to the children of New York, alongside Spiderman, the biggest superhero of them all,” said Charles J. Lyons, President of the US Fund for UNICEF.
