UN official discusses deteriorating Palestinian conditions with Israeli Foreign Minister

Worsening conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories topped the agenda of talks in Jerusalem between a senior United Nations official and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, a UN spokesperson announced today.

During yesterday's meeting with the Foreign Minister, the UN's Assistant Emergency Relief Coordinator, Ross Mountain, discussed "the deteriorating humanitarian situation resulting from the closures and curfews imposed in the West Bank and Gaza," spokesperson Hua Jiang told reporters in New York.

Mr. Mountain also voiced "serious concern" about the lack of progress in implementing the specific commitments made by Israel to the Secretary-General's Personal Humanitarian Envoy, Catherine Bertini, during her mission to the region two months ago, Ms. Jiang added.

The Assistant Emergency Relief Coordinator is in the region leading a technical assessment mission that will propose a humanitarian action plan for the coming 12 months.
