Citing possible bias, UN tribunal requests removal of Milosevic lawyer

Judges from the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) today asked to remove one of the court-appointed lawyers for Slobodan Milosevic, saying that comments made by the attorney could give a perception of bias against the former Yugoslav President.

In his ruling, Judge Richard May said that remarks made by Dutch lawyer Michail Wladimiroff raised questions about his appropriateness for the job, including statements that indicated the attorney had formed a view of the case that was unfavourable to the accused.

The statements taken as a whole would give rise to "a reasonable perception of bias on the part of the amicus curiae," or friend of the court, Judge May said.

Mr. Milosevic has been representing himself at his trial, which began in February, but he continues to have two lawyers who were appointed by the Tribunal to ensure that he receives a fair trial.
