The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) today said it was “deeply concerned” by media reports about a missing AIDS activist in China.

In a statement released in Geneva, UNAIDS said it has conveyed the agency’s concern about Wan Yanhai to the Chinese authorities and has written to Premier Zhu Rongji about the issue.

According to media accounts, Mr. Wan, China’s most prominent AIDS campaigner, has been missing since 24 August.
