2,000 Ugandan troops withdraw from DR of Congo, UN mission reports

About 2,000 troops from Uganda left the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as part of the continuing withdrawal of foreign soldiers from the central African nation, the head of the United Nations mission in the DRC said today.

Speaking at his weekly press briefing, Amos Namanga Ngongi noted that this positive development was in accordance of the Lusaka peace accords and Security Council resolutions. He also welcomed the start today of the withdrawal of Zimbabwean troops from the western city of Mbandaka.

As for the first class of police trainers in Kisangani, who completed their UN-organized course over the weekend, Mr. Ngongi said the aim was to allow the Congolese people to have a police force which they could trust and that could protect human rights.
