UN confirms Eritrea's release of final group of Ethiopian prisoners of war

The United Nations today confirmed that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has accompanied out of Eritrea the remaining group of Ethiopian prisoners of war (POWs) who had been registered and regularly visited by the agency.

The 279 former detainees crossed the Mereb River bridge back into Ethiopia on Thursday.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan recently welcomed the commitment by Ethiopia and Eritrea to release all remaining POWs. In a statement released by his spokesman last Friday, Mr. Annan said the pledge to set free some 1,300 Eritrean and 300 Ethiopian POWs "will no doubt contribute to the successful implementation of the peace process between the two countries."
