Afghanistan: one injured as blast rocks area near UN guest house in Kabul

Security is being tightened around the United Nations guest house in the Afghan capital of Kabul following a blast which injured one person on Sunday evening, a spokesman for the world body reported today.

The Afghan girl who was slightly injured when the explosive device went off was treated at the Kabul emergency hospital and then released an hour later. No UN personnel were reported hurt.

"We do not know who was responsible for the blast," spokesman Fred Eckhard told reporters in New York. "Additional Afghan police and security guards were placed around the compound last night."

The explosion near a trash bin also shattered a few windows but the wall around the guest house was undamaged.
