Explosion rocks warehouse in Afghanistan, UN reports

An explosion rocked a building near Jalalabad city, killing several people, leaving dozens of others injured and over 100 homes destroyed, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reported today.

The blast at a warehouse of the Afghan Construction and Logistics Unit, a non-governmental organization (NGO), reduced 80 per cent of the area's 200 private homes to rubble, according to a UN spokesman, who cited hospital statistics putting casualty figures at nine dead and 53 injured.

The facts behind the explosion are not yet definitively known, according to UNAMA.

UN personnel visited the site of the explosion, while the Mission convened a meeting of all UN agencies and international NGOs the area to review needs and provide assistance to victims.

The UN Mission personnel went to the site of the explosion for further damage assessment and to determine additional assistance needs.
