Half a million pastoralists in Ethiopia urgently need assistance to keep their cattle and camels alive amid severe drought conditions, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which has launched an appeal for funds to help alleviate the crisis.

Cattle and camels are dying in the region, where dry conditions have been aggravated by recent fighting among various groups over grazing land and water, forcing hundreds of people to leave their homes.

FAO is seeking $1.3 million to supply the veterinary drugs, animal feed and water needed to keep the animals alive during the drought. In addition to cattle and camels, rescue efforts will target thousands of breeding goats owned by internally displaced families.
