Following volcano eruption in DR of Congo, UN reports no immediate threat to residents

Lava from a volcano near the eastern town of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) could wreak physical destruction, but is not likely to harm residents in the area, the United Nations reported today.

A preliminary assessment shows that the lava flows from the Nyamulagira volcano, which erupted yesterday, were heading towards the Viruga National Park, according to UN officials, who said there was "no immediate threat" to the local population and that no roads have been cut.

Following a survey conducted overnight, a team of UN vulcanologists has been flown to the area by helicopter to get a better assessment of the situation.

UN vulcanologists are also examining Mount Nyiragongo in Goma, which erupted in January, causing extensive damage and displacing some 300,000 people from their homes.
