United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Louise Fréchette today chaired a meeting in London of the Advisory Council of the Global Compact - an initiative pioneered by Secretary-General Kofi Annan to make globalization work for the world's people.

The meeting focused on how the Global Compact has evolved, and how best to consolidate its efforts and its core areas of activity. Participants also examined ways of building a future vision for the Compact.

Representatives of business, labour, civil society, academia and major UN partners in the Compact attended today's meeting, the second of the Advisory Council, which was created in January.

As the first governing body in UN history to bring together activists and corporate administrators to deal with a wide range of issues, the Advisory Council has a number of key tasks, including proposing better standards of participation in order to improve the Compact's effectiveness.
