Annan mourns death of Nigerian diplomat, leader of anti-apartheid campaign

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today mourned the death of Ambassador Joseph Nanven Garba, a former Foreign Minister of Nigeria and President of the UN General Assembly who emerged as a leading figure in his country's diplomatic campaign against apartheid during the 1980s.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today mourned the death of Ambassador Joseph Nanven Garba, a former Foreign Minister of Nigeria and President of the UN General Assembly who emerged as a leading figure in his country's diplomatic campaign against apartheid during the 1980s.

A statement issued by the Secretary-General's spokesman in New York said Mr. Annan was saddened to learn of the death of Ambassador Garba, and conveyed his condolences to the diplomat's family and to the Government and people of Nigeria.

Before serving as President of the 44th General Assembly in 1989-1990, Ambassador Garba was Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN and Chairman of the UN Committee Against Apartheid for five years until 1989.
