A United Nations envoy on human rights activists today announced plans to undertake a fact-finding mission to Guatemala next week.
The Special Representative of Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Human Rights Defenders, Hina Jilani, will be in Guatemala from 27 May to 1 June at the Government's invitation to examine the country's legal framework as well as alleged incidents relating to the defence of human rights there.
Ms. Jilani has requested to meet with senior Guatemalan officials, including the President, Vice-President, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister of the Interior and Minister of Labour. In addition, she plans to hold discussions with the President of Congress, President of the Supreme Court, President of the Constitutional Court and the General Prosecutor, and has also requested to meet with senior army and police officials.
The Special Representative is scheduled to visit Guatemala City and San Marcos, where she will also meet with a wide range of non-governmental organizations and individuals engaged in human rights work, as well as with the country's ombudsman.
A report on the Special Representative's findings and recommendations will be submitted to the next session of the Commission on Human Rights.
