UN experts on arbitrary detention to examine conditions in Australia
A United Nations group of experts on the issue of arbitrary detention today announced plans to visit Australia later this month to examine conditions facing those who arrive in the country illegally.
A United Nations group of experts on the issue of arbitrary detention today announced plans to visit Australia later this month to examine conditions facing those who arrive in the country illegally.
The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which will visit Australia from 24 May to 6 June at the invitation of the Canberra Government, plans to examine Australia' s administrative custody of unauthorized arrivals in the country.
The Working Group will meet with the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, authorities of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade, and other senior government officials. The Working Group will also meet with representatives of Australian human rights non-governmental organizations and will visit several of the country’s reception facilities as well as processing and detention centres.
Findings from the trip will be reported to the UN Commission on Human Rights, which has on numerous occasions encouraged governments to invite the Working Group to their countries so that its experts can discharge their mandate more effectively. Previous fact-finding missions by the Working Group include visits to Romania, the United Kingdom, Bhutan, China, Indonesia, Nepal, Peru and Viet Nam.
