20 May 2002

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today expressed concern over the rising toll as a result of the continuing exchange of fire along the India-Pakistan line and called for restraint to prevent the tensions from increasing further.

"The Secretary-General is very concerned at the high level of casualties due to persistent firing along the Line of Control and the working boundary in Jammu and Kashmir," a spokesman for Mr. Annan said at a press briefing at UN Headquarters in New York.

"He calls on both sides to exercise maximum restraint to avert a further escalation of tensions," spokesman Fred Eckhard said.
