The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) has announced that it will issue a set of stamps to mark East Timor’s independence next week.

The design of the six stamps – which carry the theme “East Timor – Independence” and depict various local handiworks – was adapted by the UN from photographs by Sébastien Bertrand of Switzerland.

The stamps will go on sale on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Australian Government has presented the East Timorese Government with the first of two million postage stamps produced to mark the territory’s independence.

The stamps will also be released on 20 May and will be sold in East Timor and Australia, by mail order and over the Internet.

Revenue from the sale of the stamps will go to the East Timorese Government.
