Annan condemns deadly terrorist bus attack in Kashmir

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today denounced an attack in Kashmir on a bus carrying family members of army personnel, which left more than 30 people dead, and called for all sides to exercise “the utmost restraint” and to resolve their differences through peaceful means.

“The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest possible terms, as an act of terrorism, the attack that occurred today near the town of Jammu in Kashmir,” a spokesman for Mr. Annan said in a statement released in New York.

“He is deeply saddened by the killing of passengers, in particular women and children, in the bus transporting army personnel and their family members,” the statement said. “The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of India.”
