UN works for release of Somali employee abducted in Mogadishu

The United Nations is working to secure the release of a Somali staff member who was abducted in Mogadishu over the weekend, according to a spokesman for the world body.

Spokesman Fred Eckhard reported that Professor Mohamed Ali Aborkor, who was working for the UN Development Programme (UNDP), was kidnapped on Sunday afternoon by unknown abductors.

“The UN Country Team for Somalia is working to establish contact with the persons who have taken the officer hostage in order to ascertain his condition and whereabouts, and to ensure his safe and immediate release,” Mr. Eckhard told reporters in New York.
