Security Council sanctions panel updates list of Al-Qaida operatives

The United Nations Security Council committee monitoring sanctions against Al-Qaida and Taliban operatives has added 10 persons or entities to its extensive list of all those subject to the measures.

In a list issued on Thursday, the panel names the Aid Organization of the Ulema along with nine individuals covered by Council resolution 1390 (2002), which obliges all countries to freeze all funds and financial resources of the groups and persons in question and prevent their entry or transit through the State's territory. Nations are also required to prevent the supply, sale and transfer of all arms and materiel - along with any form of military training - to the named individuals and entities.

The committee itself was established in 1999 by resolution 1267, adopted in response to the indictment of Usama bin Laden for the terrorist bombings of United States embassies in Nairobi and Dar-es-Salaam.

The new list provides numerous aliases of the individuals concerned, some of whom have half a dozen assumed identities each.
