Security Council wraps up latest debate on Middle East crisis
The debate, which was convened at the request of Tunisia as Chairman of the Arab Group, began on Thursday when representatives of some 30 countries took the floor.
During the debate, many speakers focused on Secretary-General Kofi Annan's proposal for the deployment of a multinational force to the region, and stressed the need to implement recent Security Council resolutions, including 1402 and 1403, which demand an end to Israeli-Palestinian violence and outline steps towards reaching that goal.
After concluding its open debate, the Security Council reconvened late in the afternoon for closed-door consultations on the Middle East crisis.
