New Chief of Staff named for UN Truce Supervision Organization in Middle East

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has named Gen. Carl A. Dodd of Ireland as the new Chief of Staff of the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in the Middle East, according to documents released at UN Headquarters in New York.

In an exchange of letters with the President of the Security Council, the Secretary-General notes that Major-General Dodd will replace Major-General Franco Ganguzza of Italy, who relinquished the post at the end of March.

UNTSO, set up in 1948, is the oldest UN peacekeeping operation. Its military observers remain in the Middle East to monitor ceasefires, supervise armistice agreements, prevent isolated incidents from escalating and assist other UN peacekeeping operations in the region.
