DR of Congo: Annan condemns deadly attack against Catholic church

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today strongly condemned an attack on a Catholic church in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and called for a speedy investigation into the incident.

According to a statement released in New York by the Secretary-General’s spokesman, Mr. Annan was “deeply shocked” to learn of Sunday’s grenade attack on the congregation in Goma, which reportedly left three people dead and many more injured.

“The Secretary-General strongly condemns this attack, which has compounded the grief and sorrow of the population of Goma, who has only recently suffered the deadly eruption of Mount Nyiragongo,” the statement said.

Mr. Annan also commended the UN Organization Mission in the DRC (MONUC) for providing help to the victims of the attack by transporting the injured to medical facilities in Kigali and Goma.
