UN mission welcomes move by Council of Europe to admit Bosnia and Herzegovina

The United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH) today welcomed the decision by the Council of Europe to invite the Balkan country to join as its 44th member.

Although significant steps must still be taken by the country’s authorities to fulfil their post-accession commitments, yesterday’s expression of confidence by the Council’s Committee of Ministers will help take Bosnia and Herzegovina a step closer to its rightful place in the European community of nations, UNMIBH said in a statement issued at its headquarters in Sarajevo.

“Accession will create greater mutual confidence in the relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina, its neighbours and wider Europe and will allow [the country] to fulfil its promise of being the most multi-ethnic democratic country in the Balkans,” the statement said.
