Colombia: UN condemns violent murder of Archbishop of Cali

Reacting to Saturday's killing of the Archbishop of Cali, Colombia, the United Nations has denounced the crime and called on the country's authorities to bring those responsible to justice.

"The UN system in Colombia deplores and condemns the violent murder of Monsignor Isaías Duarte Cancino," said a press statement released on Sunday, which characterized the incident as "part of the deplorable series of violent acts perpetrated in Colombia against civilians."

"We call on the Colombian authorities to immediately and urgently take all judicial actions to find, prosecute and punish those responsible for the crime," the UN urged.

The statement also voiced solidarity and extended condolences to the family of Monsignor Duarte Cancino - who carried out an ongoing dialogue with the UN - as well as the authorities and people of Cali.
