The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today welcomed the swift end to the case of the group of people from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) who had rushed into the Spanish Embassy in Beijing on Thursday seeking asylum.

UNHCR is pleased that Spanish and Chinese authorities quickly found a humanitarian solution for the 25 North Korean asylum seekers,” Ron Redmond, a spokesman for the agency, said in Geneva.

“We understand they are now en route to the Philippines,” the spokesman added. “We appreciate the efforts of the two governments to reach a speedy conclusion.”
