Sudan: UN envoy begins visit to discuss security, humanitarian concerns

A United Nations relief envoy for the Sudan today began a visit to the country for talks with Khartoum authorities on security and humanitarian matters.

During his 10-day visit, Tom Vraalsen, Secretary-Genera Kofi Annan's Special Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs for the Sudan, is scheduled to meet with representatives of the Khartoum Government to discuss concerns over security in Southern Sudan as well as the removal of obstacles to humanitarian access to other areas of the country.

According to a UN spokesman, Mr. Vraalsen is expected to visit the Nuba Mountain region, where needs are especially acute. His plans also include a meeting with representatives of the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement in Nairobi.
