Annan welcomes Sri Lanka ceasefire agreement
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today welcomed a ceasefire agreement between the Government of Sri Lanka and rebel group the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today welcomed a ceasefire agreement between the Government of Sri Lanka and rebel group the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
Describing it as an “important step," a UN spokesman said the Secretary-General was hopeful that this accord would soon be followed by peace negotiations leading to a political settlement of the protracted internal conflict.
Mr. Annan also expressed full support for Norway's ongoing facilitation efforts in reaching that goal.
