Internal oversight office ends probe into police misconduct in UN Bosnia mission

A follow-up assessment by the United Nations oversight office into the UN Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH) has found no evidence of widespread or systematic involvement of UN police monitors in trafficking activities, a UN spokesman said today.

The UN Office of Internal Oversight (OIOS) found that investigators of the Mission's International Police Task Force have improved their inquiries into allegations of improper behaviour by police monitors, although the results of these investigations have not always been adequately communicated to the public, the spokesman said.

The OIOS also found that the mission's internal communications needed strengthening in order to satisfy the requirement for full transparency and accountability that is expected in all peacekeeping missions.
