Seeking to express their solidarity with the women of Afghanistan, a United Nations committee will adopt a formal statement on the important role they should play in the country's reconstruction, the body's chairperson said today.

Briefing reporters in New York, Charlotte Abaka, Chairperson of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, said the statement - to be adopted when the session concludes early next month - would emphasize the importance of the equal participation of men and women during the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan.

Through the statement, the 23-member Committee would recognize Afghan women who have suffered through years of privation and had endured the loss of their fundamental human rights, particularly the right to life, education, health and work.

The Committee would welcome the resolve of the international community to assist in the rebuilding of the country and call for respect for internationally recognized standards of human rights, particularly those of women, the chairperson said.
