Security Council revises list of Afghanistan sanctions to target Al-Qaida network

The Security Council today revised its list of sanctions against Afghanistan to target the Al-Qaida network and its supporters.

In a unanimous decision, the Council adopted a resolution Wednesday evening updating a previous set of measures that required all countries to freeze the financial assets of individuals, groups or organizations on a list compiled by its sanctions committee for Afghanistan.

The resolution also obliges nations to continue a travel ban and arms embargo on the remaining elements of the Taliban, Al-Qaida network and its supporters.

Under the resolution, countries will be required to report within three months to the Council sanctions committee the steps they have taken to implement the measures adopted today.

The Council said it would review its action in 12 months and choose whether to allow the measures to continue or "decide to improve them."
