UN logistics base in Lebanon to serve as coordinating hub for demining effort

Supporting the Government of Lebanon's ongoing efforts to rid the country of deadly landmines, the United Nations peacekeeping mission there today announced that it would transform its Tyre Logistics Base into a coordinating centre for the anti-mine campaign.

All principal parties involved in the physical demining of southern Lebanon will be located together at the new Coordination Centre so as to ensure good cooperation and the efficient exchange of information among them as they carry out their work, known collectively as Operation Emirates Solidarity.

The handover, set to take place on Wednesday, will be conducted by the Force Commander of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Major-General Lalit Mohan Tewari, who will transfer the Coordination Centre to Lebanon's Defence Minister, Khalil Haraoui.

The United Arab Emirates has donated $50 million for the campaign to destroy landmines in Southern Lebanon.
