Annan welcomes Pakistan’s ‘determined law enforcement action’

31 December 2001

Secretary-General Kofi Annan today welcomed the determined law enforcement action taken by the Pakistani authorities, calling such measures “an important step towards easing tensions in the region.”

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Mr. Annan recalled that the leaders of India and Pakistan are due to attend the upcoming summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), to be held in Kathmandu. “He strongly urges the two countries to seize this opportunity to reduce tensions further.”

In the meantime, the Secretary-General urged both governments to avoid escalating actions and further statements that could aggravate the situation, according to the statement.
