Afghanistan: Brahimi to address ceremony marking change of power

Lakhdar Brahimi
Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative for Afghanistan, Lakhdar Brahimi, will address a ceremony in Kabul on Saturday marking the transition to a new Interim Administration.

Mr. Brahimi will speak to up to 2,000 participants expected to assemble in the Hall of the Interior Ministry, where the current President, Burhanuddin Rabbani, will hand over power to Hamid Karzai, the designated leader of the Afghan Interim Authority. Both the outgoing and future leaders will also make speeches.

Mr. Karzai, who was selected during UN-sponsored talks among Afghan factions which wrapped up earlier this month in Bonn, will be sworn in by the Acting Head of the Supreme Court. The new Afghan leader will then swear in the other members of the Interim administration.
