UN adviser on Colombia urges Government, rebels to restart peace talks

The special adviser on Colombia for United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has called on the Government and rebels to restart that country's peace process, urging the two sides to meet before the current agreement on the demilitarized zone ends early next year.

Jan Egeland's call, made in remarks to reporters in Bogotá, came after he met on Thursday with the leaders of the rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in their demilitarized zone.

The agreement on the demilitarized zone expires on 20 January 2002.
