DR of Congo: more than 1,600 Rwandan fighters undergo disarmament screening

More than 1,600 former Rwandan fighters in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have been screened as part of the disarmament process, the United Nations Organization Mission in the DRC (MONUC) said today.

On 10 November, nearly 1,800 unarmed men - most of them young, and some injured or handicapped - were presented to MONUC in Kamina for the opening ceremony of the census and identification operation, according to MONUC.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative for the DRC, Amos Ngongi, and a delegation from the European Union, led by Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel, will be in Kamina tomorrow to witness the last day of the operation.
