Annan, President Bush visit ‘ground zero’ of terror attacks in New York

Annan, Bush at 'ground zero'
Exactly two months after the terrorist attacks against the United States, United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan today accompanied United States President George W. Bush to the “ground zero” site at the World Trade Center in New York.

The Secretary-General first visited ground zero on 18 September, expressing his shock at the magnitude of the destruction and conveying to New Yorkers the full support, sympathy and admiration of the UN.

"Let's not forget, the UN is also a New York institution and all the Ambassadors and the staff are rooting for you just as their governments around the world are," Mr. Annan said during that visit. He also stressed that the attack did not just target New York or the United States, but instead was a strike against the world. "That's why we all need to come together to fight" terrorism, he said.
