Security Council members hail creation of Burundian transitional government

Members of the United Nations Security Council today welcomed the establishment of the Transitional Government yesterday in Burundi, and applauded Africans leaders for their contribution to a peaceful settlement.

Ambassador Patricia Durrant of Jamaica, President of the 15-member body for the month of November, said in a press statement today that Council members commended the Governments and Heads of State of the region for their efforts at furthering the peace process.

"In particular, [they] note the positive contributions of the South African Government in providing protection for returning political leaders," she said, adding that Council members also paid tribute to the role of former South African President Nelson Mandela as Facilitator for his "excellent contribution to the peace process."
