A senior judge from Egypt was elected today to the United Nations International Court of Justice (ICJ) to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of its President last month.

Nabil Elaraby, currently a member of the UN International Law Commission and a commissioner of the UN Compensation Commission in Geneva, was elected to serve out the term of Judge Mohammed Bedjaoui, whose resignation took effect 30 September. Judge Elaraby will serve until 5 February 2006.

Judge Elarby was elected, according to the voting procedures, by an absolute majority in both the General Assembly and the Security Council.
