Oil-for-food programme in Iraq not affected by recent events, UN says

Tuesday's terror attacks against the United States have not impeded the humanitarian work of the United Nations in Iraq, a spokesman for the world body announced today.

"Regarding the United Nations oil-for-food programme for Iraq, the financial and other operational aspects of the programme have not been affected by the events of the last two days," spokesman Fred Eckhard told reporters in New York.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Iraq Programme, which runs the oil-for-food scheme, today released its weekly update on the humanitarian effort in the country. According to the update, over the past week, Baghdad exported 14.2 million barrels of oil - up 1.2 million barrels from the previous week - earning €367 million (euros) or $329 million.
