Annan's special envoy to visit Myanmar for talks between government, democracy leader

Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Envoy for Myanmar will visit Yangon next week to help facilitate the talks between the Government and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for democratisation and national reconciliation in that country, a United Nations spokesman said today.

During his visit from 27 to 30 August, the envoy, Razali Ismail, is expected to meet with Gen. Than Shwe, Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), and other Government leaders. He is also expected to meet with senior members of the National League for Democracy (NLD), including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

This will be Mr. Razali's fifth mission to Myanmar since he was appointed as the Special Envoy in April 2000.
