The United Nations Foundation has set up two new mechanisms for channelling donations to the Global AIDS and Health Fund first proposed by Secretary-General Kofi Annan, a UN spokesman announced today.

Interested individuals can now donate by visiting the website of the Foundation, which was originally set up to execute philanthropist Ted Turner's historic $1 billion gift in support of UN causes. Donations can also be made by phone to 001-866-AIDS-FUND.

Since last week, the Foundation has been accepting funds by cheque or wire transfer. Those wishing to contribute by mail may send cheques payable to "UNF - Global Fund" to the United Nations Foundation, ATTN: Global Fund, Post Office Box 21001-1899, Pasadena, CA, 91110-1899.

Meanwhile, the UN Information Centre in London today launched a campaign to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS spearheaded by Cat Deeley, a children's TV presenter and model. Called "Break the Silence," the campaign will begin in a London school where children will be able to pledge their support for a number of different projects on the Internet through the NetAid website.
