Concerned over events in Lebanon, Security Council members call for restraint

Members of the Security Council today voiced concern at recent events in southern Lebanon, expressing hope that the parties will control their actions in order to avoid a worsening of the situation.

Speaking to the press following closed-door consultations, the Council President, Ambassador Wang Yingfan of China, said the members called for an easing of tensions in southern Lebanon as well as respect for the line of Israeli withdrawal - known as the Blue Line - and for the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The members "hoped the parties concerned will exercise restraint to avoid further deterioration of the situation in Lebanon," Ambassador Wang added.

Council members "all expressed their support" for the work of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) as well as for the efforts of the Secretary-General and his Special Representative.

During consultations, the Council was briefed by Joachim Hutter, the Director of the Asia and Middle East Division of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
