Peru: Annan wishes newly elected President success in democratic rebuilding

5 June 2001

Congratulating Alejandro Toledo Manrique on his election as President of Peru, Secretary-General Kofi Annan today wished him success in rebuilding and strengthening the country's democratic institutions, consolidating the rule of law and bringing greater prosperity to all Peruvians.

"The Secretary-General wishes to praise the people of Peru for holding elections that have been described as free, fair and transparent," a spokesman for Mr. Annan said today in a statement.

He noted that this process had enjoyed the participation of national and international observers, including the United Nations, which had provided "needed" technical assistance to Peru's National Office for Electoral Process.
