Security Council panel recommends measures for peacekeeping operations

A new report on United Nations peacekeeping issued today recommends improved consultations between the Security Council and troop-contributing countries among the ways to strengthen the UN's peace operations.

The first report by the Security Council Working Group on Peacekeeping Operations also supports establishing regional peacekeeping training centres to increase international cooperation for peacekeeping.

The Security Council in January established the Working Group, chaired by Ambassador Curtis A. Ward of Jamaica, to examine the relationship between the Council, troop-contributing countries and the Secretariat.

The panel also recommends strengthening cooperation among troop-contributing countries in the areas of training, logistics and equipment. It requests the Secretary-General to convene assessments meetings with troop-contributing countries at various stages of an operation. It says countries providing troops should conduct reconnaissance visits to the mission area, and prepare contingency plans and exit strategies for volatile situations.
