IAEA Board names Mohamed ElBaradei for second four-year term as head of atomic energy agency

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced today that its Board of Directors has recommended Mohamed ElBaradei for a second four-year term as IAEA Director General.

The Board's selection must be approved by the IAEA General Conference to take effect from the end of November when the current term expires.

Mr. ElBaradei, who has served as Director General since 1 December, has been a senior member of the IAEA Secretariat since 1984, holding a number of high-level policy positions. He was the Legal Adviser before heading the Division of External Relations, and becoming Assistant Director General for External Relations in 1993.

He served previously as an Ambassador in the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in the country's Permanent Missions to the United Nations in New York and Geneva.

Born in Egypt in 1942, Mr. ElBaradei has a Bachelor's degree in Law from the University of Cairo and a Doctorate in International Law from the New York University School of Law.
