Annan heads to United Kingdom next week for meetings with top officials
Secretary-General Kofi Annan will travel to the United Kingdom early next week to deliver a lecture at Oxford University and hold meetings with top officials in London, a United Nations spokesman announced today.
On Tuesday, the Secretary-General will deliver a lecture on democracy at Oxford University, according to spokesman Manoel de Almeida e Silva. "The Secretary-General will also participate in the University's Encaenia ceremony where he will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Civil Law," the spokesman added.
The Secretary-General will begin his official visit to the country on Thursday, meeting first with Prime Minister Tony Blair. Mr. Annan will also hold talks with the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, the Secretary for International Development, the Secretary of Defence, the Prince of Wales and the Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. de Almeida e Silva said.
On Friday morning, the Secretary-General will meet with key business leaders before returning to New York.
